Interests: Since 2004 I was involved in several projects within the Pharmaceutical Care program at NIVEL. In my PhD research (2008-2013) I evaluated the use of Real Time Medication Monitoring with a tailored SMS reminder to support diabetes type 2 patients in taking their oral antidiabetic medication. One of my interests is still the use of new technologies to support patients in their medication use. In the meanwhile, my interest has expanded to (improving) communication between the pharmacy team and patients about their medication use (hence the COM-MA and TRIAGE projects – see below). This also involves identifying patients with inadequate health literacy skills to be taken into account in the communciation (RALPH project – see below).
Specifically in collaboration with Annemiek Linn:
- COM-MA: The development and test of an online communication training for pharmacy technicians in outpatient pharmacies to improve their patient-centred communication skills. We do this by recording their conversations at the counter, let them reflect on their own communication after which we give them personal feedback to improve their communication.
- TRIAGE: The development and test a set of questions for pharmacy technicians in community pharmacies to ask at the counter to quickly identify potential medication-related problems of patients and to choose a strategy to solve these problems (either handle it themselves, or refer to the pharmacist, the prescriber or another healthcare provider).
Other project at NIVEL (a selection):
- RALPH: development and test of an instrument to identify patients with inadequate health literacy skills at the pharmacy counter.
